Embedded programming: common questions

What is embedded programming?

Embedded programming is writing the firmware that runs inside a device, such as a sensor node, controller or smart appliance, so that it can read sensors, control hardware and communicate. Kelectron develops this firmware in Embedded C/C++ for microcontrollers and connects it to cloud platforms and apps.

Which microcontrollers and platforms do you work with?

ESP8266, ESP32, STM32, PIC, AVR and ARM Cortex microcontrollers, with real-time operating systems such as FreeRTOS and Zephyr, or a custom RTOS when the project needs it.

How do you keep connected devices secure?

Data is encrypted in transit with HTTPS, TLS and AES, IoT devices use secure authentication for access control, and firmware is protected with secure boot and secure firmware storage. Updates are delivered over the air with secure boot.

Can your firmware connect to AWS, Azure or Google Cloud?

Yes. Devices communicate over MQTT, CoAP, HTTP or WebSocket and integrate with AWS IoT, Azure IoT Hub and Google Cloud IoT, with dashboards for monitoring, control and device management.

Can devices run on batteries or solar power?

Yes. We use sleep and deep-sleep modes and power optimisation techniques, battery-level monitoring, and support for solar and other energy-harvesting sources.
